got craft? :: spring 2011 :: it's coming!

design and illustration by the Beautiful Project

It's that time of year again! The Spring Got Craft? event is just around the corner and this year, we are turning 5 years old! Hip hip hip hooray! Thank you to all of our lovely vendors, sponsors and attendees. We started 5 years ago brand spanking new to the handmade community and just started tacking some pieces of paper with pull tabs at local coffee shops asking if anybody wanted to join our fair and here we are now!

There are lots to do at our next show including a complimentary D.I.Y. lounge hosted by Spool of Thread to make your own projects, tasty treats by Bake Sale Baking Co. and The Gluten Free Epicurean and veggie pakoras by Varinicey parked outside. DJ Duff will be providing the tunes and of course, over 55 handmade artists including our friends Maker Faire Vancouver, Collage Collage and Barefoot Contessa (selling their own handmade goods)!

Oh! If you haven't heard, we are beyond thrilled to have Etsy sign on as a new sponsor < insert cartwheels and sparklers > . This has been in the works for almost two years and according to my research, we are the first handmade market in Canada to have their support. Yippee!

Here are the details... See y'all there!

Collage Collage is a workshop and store that holds classes for students 2 – 12 years old. Inspired by the Reggio Approach, and with 10 years of teaching art to children artist and owner Erin Boniferro has created an arts class room of her own.

Erin first approached me at a craft fair a few years ago and I can not tell you how amazing this lady is. Ah-mazing I tell you! I was lucky enough to interview her for Granville Online back in February and then work with her on the Etsy Craft Party.

Well, Collage Collage is turning one and they want you to come and celebrate. There will be lots of new things for you to 'ooh and ahh' at, colouring posters by State Creative, crayons and cupcakes!

Here are the details:

When:
Saturday, September 18th, 2010 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Where:
621 Kingsway, Vancouver

etsy craft party round up

Hey! Did you make it out to the Etsy craft party in Vancouver last month hosted by Got Craft?, Collage Collage, Spool of Thread Sewing Lounge and RubyDog's Art House? Hope so! We, unfortunately, were not able to attend, but it sounded like good times were had by all.

Here are some long overdue pictures from Erin at Collage Collage. Collage Collage is a workshop space and retail shop that focuses on children, so Erin whipped up some kid friendly projects including using ceramic friendly markers provided by Etsy to paint their own teacup!

I am proud to announce that the Vancouver Etsy meet up had a whopping 81 RSVP's. Out of a total of 602 meet ups around the world, we ranked 11th and no other Canadian city even came close to us. Goooo... crafty Vancouver! The top 50 cities with the most RSVP's received a box of goodies from Etsy (pictured above).

Thank you to everybody that made it out and a BIG thank you Rita for bringing lemon cupcakes and Stace for the raspberry shortcake cookies. Happy belated birthday Etsy!

handmade nation vancouver round 2

The Museum of Vancouver hosted a screening of Handmade Nation last Friday to a diverse crowd consisting of DIY crafters and members of the Museum. The event had a fantastic turn out and many people left the evening feeling inspired and with a new appreciation for handmade. Following the screening, the MOV held a guest panel to speak about the DIY movement in Vancouver and answer questions raised by the audience. The panel consisted of Robert from Got Craft?, Kim Werker from CrochetMe.com and Erin Bonniferro from Collage Collage and facilitated by Amanda Gibbs from the MOV. Topics covered included the growth of DIY and craft fairs in Vancouver through the last couple of years and how they have changed, the difference (if any) between the DIY movement in the US vs. Canada, the difference in crafting for a hobby and crafting for a living, DIY vs. fine art, gender in the craft movement, to name a few.

I’ve known Kim and Erin for quite a while and to hear them speak, along with Robert, up on that panel was both amazing and inspiring. They are all well spoken and the MOV could not have picked a better group to speak. I hope that everybody that attended had as much as fun as I did.

We also held a mini Got Craft during the evening reception including Locomotive Clothing, telly designs, Sassy Contessa and roxypop.

Were you not able to attend? The MOV is hosting another DIY event – A night of Social Crafting on Friday, April 9th. Check out their website for ticket and event information!
