Him Creations - feature #22

Name: Him Creations by Shima
Website links: himcreations.com

What do you make?
I make needle felted creatures as well as amigurumi, pottery, clothes, bags and beads accessories. I sometimes crochet or knitt. Some crafts I am good at :) some of them I am...not :(

I like to make things by my hand as much as I can. I think it's from my crafty parents' DNA.

What or who inspires you?
Anything really; animals, nature, my imagination, dreams, stories, my husband, my family and my good friends.

How did you get started?
I started needle felting about one year ago.

It wasn't really on purpose. I bought a big bag of wool about three years ago to make a felt bag by wet felting. But I wasn't very good at it ( I didn't have the patience I think...). The wool stayed in my bedroom for a couple of years, until I found a book about how to make felt. The book explained another technique called needle felting, so I got the book and a needle to try it out.

It worked for me! The book didn't tell me much, so I figured it out by playing with the needle and wool.

I enjoyed creating unique characters and people around me encouraged me to take it a bit more seriously.

What are your favourite materials to work with?
Wool, fabric, clay...

What is the hardest and most favourite part of crafting?
Hardest part: When I think I have a good idea and it ends up not so good... Also, sometimes I accidentally stab myself with the felting needle (ouch!)... or lose them and end up looking for them forever.

Favorite part: When I have an idea to create something new and it ends up much better than I thought! I like watching people's great reactions when they see my creations :)

List 5 of your favourite links and why you like them

TLC Vancouver: A great free magazine from Vancouver!

Etsy: A good way to see other peoples creations! and good way to show and sell your own stuff.

My Lampwork: She is a friend of mine. She does great work!!

Wikipedia: Whatever I don't know, I need wiki's help!!

The Fan Yard: It's a great site if you like sports and always guessing which team going to win! try your skill!

Do you have any advice for those in the biz?
Enjoy making things!

Do you consider yourself an artist or a crafter?
I think Art and Craft are different. But it not completely different.

I can't explain, so I just like to say I am a creator.

Jenny Hart - feature #21

Name: Jenny Hart
Website links: Jenny Hart, Sublime Stitching

What do you make?
I am an artist, author and designer. I make fine art with embroidery (http://www.jennyhart.net), I write books on needlework and update instructions and I design contemporary embroidery patterns in themes that were never available before, through my company, Sublime Stitching. I made it my mission eight years ago to update the aesthetic and resources for hand-embroidery to inspire a new generation of stitchers.

What or who inspires you?
I'm inspired by anyone who has a unique vision that clearly stands apart. You know it when you see it, because it makes you feel something. It makes you feel your own kind of inspiration that can take form in you that is totally unique as well. I feel this is true in art, music, film, writing -anything. There are endless forms that inspiration can take and I think the incredibly diverse offerings of work within the DIY community alone is a remarkable testament to that. For my own work, I often find I'm inspired by what I don't see. Meaning, I end up looking for something I'm curious about, or have imagined or wanted. Then I seek it out -if I can't find it, I'll try to make it myself. That's how Sublime Stitching was born, after all!

How did you get started?
When I first took up embroidery, I had never tried it before. But once I did, I became completely addicted to it. This was in the summer of 2000, and the handmade movement was just really starting up, but with a heavy focus on knitting. No one was really doing anything with embroidery in the contemporary sense, and there were no new resources for it. I was so taken with embroidery because it's illustrative (and drawing is my first passion). I wanted to turn other crafters on to it as well, but knew they’d need updated patterns, starter kits and instructions -exactly what I was looking for but couldn't find anywhere. The idea of tattoo designs for patterns was considered outrageous!

My mission as a company was to change the way people looked at and learned embroidery. I began with a very modest but generous loan of $1,000.00 from my parents, I had to outline an entire budget to my father and account for every dime he loaned me, which I did. It covered my first manufacturing costs, shipping, packaging and my first print ad. They asked that I pay back half once I turned a profit which I did six months later. I never borrowed money again until five years into running the company. I have been very careful about the kind of debt I’ve acquired and have tried to avoid costly loans or over-use of credit cards.

What are your favourite materials to work with?
The simplest materials are my favorite: paper and pencil for drawing, plain cotton and embroidery floss. The rest is inspiration and motivation. That the secret ingredient.

What is the hardest and most favourite part of crafting?
The hardest part always comes about two-thirds of the way into a project, when the outcome is still unsure and I’m not yet satisfied with its direction. I always want to abandon the project at that point and start over. I’ve learned to keep at it though and push through that stage. The best part is when you have that “magic momentum” where you are working, but not really thinking –just doing it. That’s the dragon I’m chasing when I work. To enter that zone of creativity and satisfying work and making it last as long as possible. Each time I do a project, I’m hoping that I’ll re-capture that experience. It’s even more satisfying than finishing the work and being happy with the results, for me. Because I look at a piece and I think about how it made me feel as I was working on it, and the finished work is like a record of that experience to me.

List 5 of your favourite links and why you like them

Disclaimer! These are some of my non-needlework related links of interest.

Uniform Freak: Maybe I'm weird, but I love going through this site and looking at all the different types of airline uniforms from around the world. Equally fascinating is the fact that one person has actually managed to collect them and taken the time photograph them on mannequins.

La Coquette: Elisabeth Fourmont’s blog is an envy-inspiring look at her move to Paris (she was born and raised in the States, but her father is French). Oh, and she write for fashion magazines and goes to all the runway shows. She's sweet and funny and is living the life.

Red Velvet Art: The header says "We're taking over the world, and making it soooo cute!" so I don't think I need to explain why this blog is so great.

Pilllpat’s Flickr Sets of French Ephemera: This is an enormous collection of scanned French ephemera. I can't imagine how much time she's spent putting it all together.

Dinosaurs and Robots: Mr. Jalopy and Mark Frauenfelder’s blog with guest bloggers (and I'm one of them). But I do check it regularly to read Mr. Jalopy's funny and endearing entries on fashion and automobiles (he's kind of like a gentleman grease-monkey) along with everyone's unique contributions. Plus, it’s really fun for me to have a site where I can blog about my interests outside embroidery!

Do you have any advice for those in the biz?
I do! Read my column, "Crafting a Business"! I've poured more of what I've learned into those columns than I could ever offer up in a few sentences.

Do you consider yourself an artist or a crafter?
For so long there was a stigma about "crafting", which has obviously changed a great deal. I consider myself an artist, only because I don't really think I've earned the "crafter" moniker for myself. I always tell people that the craftiest person I know is Jennifer Perkins (Naughty Secretary Club). I don't sew, or magically bring together lots of materials in new and different ways, which other people do so much better than me. I draw, embroider, and run a business. When people ask what I do, I tell them I'm an artist and designer, because I either make my own art, or I design for other people who craft. Believe me, I wish I had more time for crafting.

district thirty - feature #20

Name: district thirty by Alison Clucas
Website links: districtthirty.com

What do you make?
I hand make Sterling Silver jewelry inspired by nature and simplicity.

What or who inspires you?
Oh wow! The list is endless. I read many jewelry books for inspiration but mainly I find inspiration from other jewelers. There are some very unique, creative people out there! Also, I am forever appreciating nature and what Mother Nature provides us with so you’ll notice many designs focusing on trees and flowers.
Plus I doodle. A lot!!!

How did you get started?
I’ve always had a fascination with jewelry and accessories so when I was at a jewelry and lingerie showing that was put on by a very good friend of mine, Julie Chung of Love Bobbie (shout outs hehe), who represented a few Vancouver designers I had the opportunity to speak to one of the jewelry designers. She advised me on how to get started and the rest is history.

What are your favourite materials to work with?
Sterling, Sterling, Sterling… I am in the process of looking into moving to recycled sterling in the near future. I also intend to work with gold and semi precious/precious after mastering sterling and stone setting.

What is the hardest and most favourite part of crafting?
Hardest: Motivating myself to work after coming home from my regular “day job”
Favourite: When I’m contacted by stores who would like to carry my jewelry. What a great compliment! As difficult as it is for me to get motivated to begin the jewelry making process when I arrive home from my day job, once I start it’s very hard to stop….My poor neighbors.

List 5 of your favourite links and why you like them

www.Supermarkethq.com: Very cool designers and plenty of things to be purchased. Especially things you might not find in everyday Vancouver shopping.

www.Etsy.com: Has brought me tons of business and you can find anything handmade there. I think it might be getting a little saturated due to popularity though.

www.klimt02.net: I like this site because not only does it have some fascinating jewelers from around the world but it also has a link to their website, their artist statement and a CV including their education, awards and exhibitions.

www.crafthaus.ning.com: My favourite Art medium being Jewelry of course. This website is more of a communication highway for designers.

www.metalcyberspace.com: provides a massive A to Z list of jewelry designers and their websites.

The list of my favorite jewelry designer websites is endless.

Do you have any advice for those in the biz?
Yikes….I think I’m still the one seeking advise but if I can suggest anything it’s believe in yourself and make a product that you are proud of. Don’t be too shy to apply to shows and get involved. You have to start somewhere. Ask questions, ask questions and ask questions. Believe it or not, people love to share.

Do you consider yourself an artist or a crafter?
Hmmmm....I consider myself an artistic crafter. The term/word Artist seems (to me) very professional, mature and established while Crafter feels more realistic, relaxed and fun.

tinywarbler designs - feature #19

Name: Kate, tinywarbler designs
Website links: Etsy, Blog

What do you make?
I make small, soft animals made from my original patterns. They are made from melton wool, cashmere blends and I use cotton fabric and Japanese cottons as accents. They are stitched entirely by hand and are now being stuffed with soft (local) lambswool. I also make some limited edition items during special holidays. There will be bats in the shop again soon, just in time for Halloween.
(and for fun, I am teaching myself how to make quilts.)

What or who inspires you?
I can find inspiration in almost anything! Obviously I am inspired by nature (I love watching animal planet!) but sometimes all it takes is a song, or a color. My creative husband is a constant source of inspiration for me as well.

How did you get started?
I’ve been creating and making things since I was little. Drawing, coloring, ceramics, collages- I loved it all. There was then a long period where I didn’t make anything, then
I started to work for a local designer couple making their jewelry as production work. That got my hands moving again and inspired me to create something of my own.
I had the urge to use some the fabric I had started collecting, so I picked up a pencil and started sketching. One thing lead to another and next thing I knew I had made an elephant. It all happened within a few hours. I was hooked. (and shocked!)

What are your favourite materials to work with?
I love working with textiles.(meaning, I have a slight fabric addiction!) Wool, linen, cotton fabric. It’s a nice contrast to the silver and bronze I had been working with in the jewelry studio.

What is the hardest and most favourite part of crafting?
I think there is nothing more satisfying then the process of having an idea and seeing it through to the end so you have a tangible, finished product. Although it can be frustrating when an idea doesn’t translate as smoothly as you’d like it and you are left with a tangled mass of fabric, thread and wool that doesn’t look anything like what you had in mind. (can you tell this just happened recently?)

List 5 of your favourite links and why you like them

Etsy: so great for finding unique, handmade items, great fabrics and supplies. Plus my shop is there!

Flickr: so many amazing and beautiful photos here. I have spent many an hour here.

This American life: I love listening to ira glass while I’m sewing. I’ve laughed out loud and been moved to tears.

Whip up: a great place to get some tips on a new sewing technique, check out some patterns or just enjoy the eye candy.

A Cup of Jo: Joanna always has such pretty eye candy there, fashion, art, music, video clips.

Do you have any advice for those in the biz?
Oh, I don’t think I’m qualified to be offering up advice! I just try to keep an open mind, do everything to the best of my ability and treat people the way I would like to be treated in return. For me, I always try to remember that I started doing this because I like to make stuff. If it stops being fun, then I think it’s time to move on.

Do you consider yourself an artist or a crafter?
I think these terms have become interchangeable. The craft movement has become so pervasive that I think it really blurs the lines between the two. I’m really not too fussy about it, I don’t mind if people consider my work art or craft, perhaps it’s a bit of both.
