cheese please!

Next time you are shopping in South Cambie, make sure to stop by Mount Pleasant Cheese at 3432 Cambie Street and check out the window display by one of our vendors - Shima from Him Creations. We did a feature on her back in November. You can read all about her work here.

Him Creations - feature #22

Name: Him Creations by Shima
Website links: himcreations.com

What do you make?
I make needle felted creatures as well as amigurumi, pottery, clothes, bags and beads accessories. I sometimes crochet or knitt. Some crafts I am good at :) some of them I am...not :(

I like to make things by my hand as much as I can. I think it's from my crafty parents' DNA.

What or who inspires you?
Anything really; animals, nature, my imagination, dreams, stories, my husband, my family and my good friends.

How did you get started?
I started needle felting about one year ago.

It wasn't really on purpose. I bought a big bag of wool about three years ago to make a felt bag by wet felting. But I wasn't very good at it ( I didn't have the patience I think...). The wool stayed in my bedroom for a couple of years, until I found a book about how to make felt. The book explained another technique called needle felting, so I got the book and a needle to try it out.

It worked for me! The book didn't tell me much, so I figured it out by playing with the needle and wool.

I enjoyed creating unique characters and people around me encouraged me to take it a bit more seriously.

What are your favourite materials to work with?
Wool, fabric, clay...

What is the hardest and most favourite part of crafting?
Hardest part: When I think I have a good idea and it ends up not so good... Also, sometimes I accidentally stab myself with the felting needle (ouch!)... or lose them and end up looking for them forever.

Favorite part: When I have an idea to create something new and it ends up much better than I thought! I like watching people's great reactions when they see my creations :)

List 5 of your favourite links and why you like them

TLC Vancouver: A great free magazine from Vancouver!

Etsy: A good way to see other peoples creations! and good way to show and sell your own stuff.

My Lampwork: She is a friend of mine. She does great work!!

Wikipedia: Whatever I don't know, I need wiki's help!!

The Fan Yard: It's a great site if you like sports and always guessing which team going to win! try your skill!

Do you have any advice for those in the biz?
Enjoy making things!

Do you consider yourself an artist or a crafter?
I think Art and Craft are different. But it not completely different.

I can't explain, so I just like to say I am a creator.
