the lunch box project

My apple cozy is featured on Lisa Orgler's website today! Started in January 2009, the Lunch Box Project is Lisa's resolution to paint an image of food daily. As you can see on her website, she has already achieved her goal of 365 illustrations, but has decided to carry on the tradition by adding a new twist. For 2010, Lisa's goal is to pick monthly themes to focus her food paintings.

In her own words:
"After many weeks of nagging from my nine-year old daughter this month I bring you... Beatle Food.... On a five hour car ride to Wisconsin, while listening to Beatle music, my daughter started noticing all the food references in their songs. This month is the list of titles she jotted down in the car that day."

Apple records was a record label founded by the Beatles. Check out some green apple art that Lisa curated here including my apple cozy pictured above!

inspire :: daisy lew

(found via Eclectica)

Check out these New York City mixed-media, pop-up books by designer Daisy Lew. Pop-Up NYC is a series of books inspired by New York City icons (the Big Apple, the Chrysler Building). From one angle (top view), the image represents an icon while another icon, represents the cityscape (side view).

Check out Daisy's full portfolio on her website by clicking here. I highly recommend it.

a brief haitus

The Gluten Free Epicurean

After Got Craft at the beginning of May, we went straight into wedding coordination mode which is what I am using as an excuse for the lack of blogging lately.

heyday design

It's a long weekend here in Canada today and I am using it as an opportunity to get organized and kick start the to do list. As much as the break was needed, I'm back and ready to share upcoming events, tutorials, local shops and all things crafty!

Showing off her swag bag goods and the pinwheel from Spool of Thread's DIY table

If you missed it at the beginning of May, here are some images from Got Craft. More images can be found on flickr or our facebook fan page.

crafty kisses to all

Thank you to everybody that came to Got Craft yesterday! We had a fantastic turn out and as always, so much fun! A big thank you to all of our vendors including Spool of Thread Sewing Lounge who hosted the DIY table and taught everybody how to many those snazzy pinwheel pins and Jeanie for being our A+ / 5 diamond / #1 photographer!

Did your receive a swag bag? The line up this year started at a record breaking 6:30am! That's 3.5 hours before the show started! By 7:30am, all 30 bags were spoken for. Read one woman's pursuit for a coveted swag bag over on her blog - Travelling the Amaranth Road - love it!

Oohhh... and the kittens! Thank you to Marilyn from Vancouver Fashion eZine who was on-site selling printed issues with half of her profits supporting the Vancouver Orphan Kitten Rescue Association. Got Craft attendees broke her record by purchasing a whopping 50 issues and raising $268 with a few additional donations! Yay kittens!

Mark your calendars! Our holiday show is on Sunday, December 5th, 2010 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm at the Royal Canadian Legion. Interested in participating? Applications are available online.

hints :: win a YUDU

We announced last week that Got Craft will be giving away a YUDU to one lucky winner at our Spring show on Sunday, May 2nd. You can read the full announcement and contest details here. Remember, contest closes on April 30th, so start uploading!

A few of you have been asking me for hints and we have been staying pretty tight lipped, but thought we would share a few tips...

1) Check out the photos in our flickr group. Just because somebody has uploaded an image, doesn't mean that you can't go to the same street corner and take another photo.

2) Check poster poles in these neighbourhoods - Kitsilano, Commercial Drive, Main Street

3) Does Your Mother Know?, Capers on 4th, Barefoot Contessa on Main St, Bean Around the World on Main St, Plush on Main, Kitsilano Neighbourhood House, Gene, Solly's on 7th Avenue, IGA on 4th Avenue, Black Dog Video, Jitters Caffe, Arbutus Coffee, Our Town, Britannia High School, JJ Bean on Commercial, Commercial Drive Organics.... some places to check ... you know.. just saying

xx double points xx
If you see our poster covered by somebody elses, please remove it and reposition theirs elsewhere. Take a picture before and after.

DIY @ MOV round two

Congratulations to the Museum of Vancouver for another successful DIY night! Got Craft was invited to hold a mini craft fair at all three events - DIY @ MOV, Handmade Nation, DIY @ MOV 2 - and we are so thankful for being a part of the team! It seemed like the first event had a bigger turnout, but you had to keep in mind that DIY@MOV 2 was held on a sunny and dry Friday night instead of a Thursday night in the middle of January. That being said, there was still a fantastic turn out and the quality of the interaction between attendees and solicitors was top notch. Not only did they have amazing workshops hosted by Collage Collage, Urban Source and Fibre Manipulator; Birkleland Wool was on-site with laps looms, wet needle felting and some amazing displays. Started in 1939, Birkeland Wool is a crafty institution here in Vancouver, so next time you are on Main and E. 20th Avenue, you should definitely go check them out. Thank you to everybody at the Museum of Vancouver for organizing, to all of our Got Craft vendors that came out and set up displays and to all the crafty attendees for supporting this fantastic event! You can read and check out the images from the first DIY @ MOV here.

a night of social crafting

Last Thursday, the Museum of Vancouver hosted a DIY night and invited Got Craft to be a part of it. Let me tell you... if you didn't make it down there, you missed out! It was so much fun!

The ladies from Yarn Bombing were on-site with yarn demostrations throughout the evening. There was a mountain of yarn that you can choose and make stuff with.

Jackie from Divesin oversaw paper collage workshops which were insanely popular. Opus donated all of the materials that you could possibly need to make the perfect take home wooden panels.

Got Craft had a super mini craft fair set up with SamMade, Divesin, Olive and myself (Roxypop).

Thank you to the MOV for all of their hard work in putting this event together. Hope to see many more DIY events! In the meantime, stay tuned for more information on 'Fine Craft' vs. DIY on Thursday, March 4th.

Swap-O-Rama-Rama Vancouver

Swap-O-Rama-Rama Vancouver is looking for a new organizer!

Swap-O-Rama-Rama (SORR) is a clothing swap and wearable art creation event. The swap begins with a giant collective pile of clothing, the unwanted costumes of all who attend. For a minimal fee and a bag of clothing, everyone is welcome to dive in and find their next new / used items from the pile. Take as little or as much clothing from this pile as you like!

After you have chosen your new clothes, move on over to a crafting station, where you can cut, sew, glue, paint, silk screen and otherwise renew someone else's rags into your riches. Materials are available through a crafty supply swap that was added to the event and sewing machines were available to help you unleash your well-dressed muse. Or, attend a workshop where you can learn how to modify your re-fashioned finds in unexpected ways.

Any useable remainders go to local charities.

SORR was born in New York, when artist Wendy Tremayne saw the power of small-scale clothing swaps among friends, and decided to extend it to the community level. These community-based, environmentally-friendly, and fun events were instant hits, and have since been embraced throughout the US. Vancouver textile artist Heather Cameron and the Work Less Party collaborated in September 2006 to first bring this event to Vancouver. In 2009, the event was then passed to the Vancouver Craft Mafia and Got Craft as a joint production.

We are currently seeking an organizer or a group to take over this Vancouver event. Organizers will be responsible for producing the entire event including volunteers, workshops, marketing, etc. Any information gathered from past events will be passed on. Interested applicants can leave a comment with your contact information or send an email to info(at)gotcraft(dot)com.

DIY @ MOV

After a pleasant holiday break, the crafting community is back and this event looks like a good one! DIY @ MOV is a night dedicated to celebrating the creativity and community of the growing DIY (do-it-yourself) craft, art and design movement in Vancouver. Materials and workshops for a range of craft activites from paper and paint to yarn will be on-hand and everybody from the craft newbie to seasons creators is encouraged to participate. Love the item that you made? MOV is providing exhibit space for those that believe are worthy for your items to be viewed for several weeks after the event.

Not the crafty type!? The event will also have a party vibe with a DJ and music by Vancouver-based indie artist, local food and a bar featuring local brews.

Museum of Vancouver - 1100 Chestnut Street, Vanier Park

Did I mention we have swag bags ?

Oh yes! Oh yes! The first 30 people through the door at Got Craft will receive a lovely Craft Stylish re-usable tote filled with goodies from all of our vendors including the Museum of Vancouver, Sublime Stitching, Portobello West, Funky Finds and Button Button.

(these 3 swag bag pictures show an assortment of what could be in your bag)

To say that these go quickly is an understatement. We had girls line up at 7:30am for an 11:00am opening last May and I hear that there's some competition this year. So get there bright and early!!

Umm... and yeah... We also had our first fight last year for one of these bags. So for the holiday show, we will be initiating a new system where the first 30 will receive a ticket which they would need to turn in to claim a bag. Please note that you must stay in line until opening (bathroom breaks / coffee runs are ok).
